Algeria came close to winning their first medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games after Yasser Triki narrowly missed the bronze medal in the Men’s Triple Jump by a matter of centimetres.
Despite not being amongst the medals it was an amazing performance for Triki after beating the national record twice.
With a jump of 17.43m, 10 centimetres better than his Algerian record, Triki finished in fifth and just missed out on third place by 4cm. The bronze medal was taken by the Burkinabe Hugues Zango 17.47m.
The gold medal went to the Portuguese Pedro Pichardo 17.98 m followed by the Chinese Zhu Yaming 17.57 in second. As for fourth place, it was taken by the American Will Claye, with a jump of 17.44 m.
There was just one more athlete who competed on day 13 under the Algerian flag, freestyle wrestler Djahid Berrahal in the 125kg category lost his fight to Kosovar Shala Egzon (6-0) in the round of 16. He becomes the last Algerian wrestler out of seven to be eliminated in Tokyo.
Tomorrow sees the beginning of the Karate events, Algeria’s last hope of coming away with a medal at this summer’s Olympic Games.
