TOKYO2020: DAY 11

Finally some excitement circulates around the Algerian Olympic team on day 11, after Yasser Triki booked a place for the final of the triple jump and Bachir Sid Azara is given a chance for the bronze medal in Greco-Roman Wrestling at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

These two results came to relieve what has been a disappointing past few days, including the other athlete’s performances today as we saw some more athletes eliminated in their respective events.

Abdelmalek Merabet was eliminated in the Men’s Greco-Roman Wrestling 67kg category, after losing to South Korean Hansu Ryu 8-0 and boxer Imane Khelif was defeated by Kellie Anne Harrington of Ireland in the lightweight category 57-60kg quarterfinals. The Algerian boxer ends the Olympic competition in fifth place.

Triki’s result was a huge boost for many as hopes of winning a medal at this Olympic Games have risen. The Algerian from the city of Constantine finished third in Group B, after achieving a jump of 17.05 meters, anything from that figure or above secures an automatic qualification for the final.

The Algerian finished behind the Portuguese Pedro Pichardo (17.71 meters) and Turkish Necati Er (17.13 meters).

24 year old Triki currently holds the Algerian record with a jump of 17.33 meters, which is the ninth best in the world in the triple jump event. The final of the triple jump competition will be held on Thursday at 3:00 am (Algeria/UK time)

A medal can also be won in the Men’s Greco-Roman Wrestling, after Algerian Bachir Sid Azara (87 kg) will take on the Serbian, Zurabi Datunashvili in the Repechage tomorrow.

The 24 year old Algerian wrestler had overcome the Chinese, Peng Fei, in the first round, before losing to Ukraine’s Zhan Beleniuk (1-1). Sid Azara was first to score, but the international law of wrestling stipulates that the wrestler who scores the last point wins.

Thankfully the Ukrainian wrestler Beleniuk’s qualification to the final, has given a chance for Sid Azara to compete for the bronze medal, subject to a victory in the Repechage.

Tomorrow will witness the entry of Abdelhak Kherbache (57 kg) and Fateh Benferdjallah (86 kg) in the Men’s Freestyle Wrestling events, where they will face Bulgarian Georgi Valentinov Vangelov and Swiss Stefan Reichmuth, respectively.
