TOKYO2020: DAY 9

A great effort and a second chance sum up day 9 for Algeria at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Just two athletes competed today in the Japanese capital and first up was Abdelkarim Fergat in the 60kg Greco-Roman Wrestling 1/8 Final. Unfortunately, the Algerian lost to Kenichiro Fumita of Japan with a final score of 8-0.

Though there is still hope for Fergat, as Fumita made it all the way to the final, resulting in a second chance for the Algerian wrestler in the Repechage where he will face the Chinese Sailike Walihan. If Fergat were to win against Walihan then he would only need to beat Ukrainian Lenur Temirov for the bronze medal.

Including Fergat, Algeria has a total of seven wrestlers at the Olympic Games, so there is still a possibility of a medal being won in the sport.

Today’s athletics events saw, Abdelmalik Lahoulou compete in the semi-finals of the Men’s 400m Hurdles. Despite a great effort from the Jijel born athlete, he ended up finishing in fifth place with a time of 49.14, just a second slower than the fastest time.

Three Algerians will compete in tomorrow’s events, starting off with Amira Kheris in the Women’s Kayak Single 200m, followed by Fergat in his Repechage match and lastly Adem Boudjemline in the Greco-Roman Wrestling 97kg 1/8 Final.
