TOKYO2020: DAY 8

Algeria’s hopes of winning a medal are thinning after another three athletes were eliminated early on in their respective events at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Experienced boxer Mohamed Flissi and his teammates, runners Yassine Hethat and Loubna Benhadja were all eliminated on day eight.

The biggest shock of the day was Mohammed Flissi’s Round of 16 defeat in the Men’s Fly (48-52kg). The 30 year old, who many thought would have a shot at a medal on what was his third Olympic appearance, was defeated comfortably by the 23 year old Carlo Paalam 5-0.

Algeria had two representatives in the track and field, Hethat in the 800m and Benhadja in the 400m hurdles but were both eliminated in the qualifying rounds.

A fifth place finish was not enough for Hethat to qualify to the next round. First place went to the Kenyan Emmanuel Currier with a time of 1:45.33; the Algerian not far off finished the race on 1:46.20.

20 year old Benhadja completed the women’s 400-meter hurdles with a personal best at 57.19. However, she didn’t earn a spot in the next round as she finished in eighth and last position.
