Some more disappointment from Algeria on day four of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, after the elimination of boxer Abdelhafid Benchabla in the round of 16 and last place finish for swimmer Oussama Sahnoune in the 100-meter freestyle.
In what is Benchabla’s fourth participation at the Olympic Games after Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016, the experienced boxer failed to overcome the number one ranked, Muslim Gadzhimagomedov of Russia. The boxer fighting under the Olympic flag defeated the Algerian comfortably 5-0 in the Men’s Heavy (81-91kg) Round of 16 bout.
Swimmer Sahnoune was not able to qualify for a spot in the Men’s 100m Freestyle semi-final, after finishing last with a time of 49.65. He will hope for a better performance in the 50-meter freestyle race scheduled on Friday.
There was some more bad news for the Algerian camp as Wrestler Mohamed Fardj (97 kg) tested positive for COVID forcing him to give up the Olympic games.
Fardj is the third athlete to be affected by coronavirus, after both Djamel Sedjati and Bilal Tabti. In total five athletes out of the 44 miss out on the Olympic Games, as announced yesterday Taoufik Makhloufi will not attend due to a knee injury and judoka Fethi Nourine forfeited after finding out that his next opponent could potentially be from Israel.
