#Rio2016: Algeria at Day 3, Day 4 & Day 5

A lot has been happening in the past three days for the Algerian team at the Rio Olympics, with boxing being the most prominent.

Boxing

On day three, Chouaib Bouloudinat did very well to make it into the quarter-finals of the men’s 91kg heavyweight. However he was defeated by the Mauritius Kennedy St-Pierre.

Ilyas Abbadi did excellently well in his fight on day 4 and qualified to the round of 16 in the the 75kg middle weight after beating Congo’s Mpi Anauel Ngamissengue. Abbadi’s next fight will be against Kazakhstan Zhanibek Alimkhanuly this Friday.

Algerians on social media were extremely happy and this was due to Reda Benbaziz  eliminating his Egyptian oponent on the weekend. Reda Benbaziz went on to beat the Russian, Adlan Abdurashidov 3-0 on day four, to make it through to the 60kg Lightweight quarter-finals. His next oponent will also be on Friday and he will be up against the Mongolian Otgondalai Dorjnyambuu.

Fahem Hammachi was sent out of the olympics, on day five, after his very close 2-1 loss to his Brazilian opponent Robenílson Vieira de Jesus Rio in the 56kg bantamweight.

Rowing

The rowing team made up of Sid Boudina and Amina Rouba did very well in day two to qualify for the quarter-finals of the single sculls rowing, as they both finished in third place.

Nevertheless, Boudina came 5th in the quarter-finals with a time of 7:13.59, which unfortunately was not fast enough to make the semi-finals.

The 2014 African champion, Rouba also did not make it through after she came sixth in her single sculls quarter-final with a time of 8:21.00.

Swimming

Oussama Sahnoune competed in the men’s 100m freestyle and did extremely well to finish first place in heat 3 with a time of 49.20s. Despite Sahnoune winning his heat, he was unable to qualify for the Semi-finals as he was not amongst the best 16 times.

Shooting

It was a huge surprise for many Algerians to see Chafik Bouaoud taking part in the 10m air rifle. Unfortunately, the shooter finished ranked 47th which was not enough to qualify.

Sailing

The Algerian sailing team made up of Hamza Bouras, Katia Belabbas and Imane Cherif Sahraoui are currently competing in their respective events which take place during the course of the first week.

Cycling

Not been the best Olympics for the Algerian cycling team. As on day one they were unable to finish the men’s road race. Things got worse when Youcef Reguigui did not start, on day 5, the road cycling men’s time trials finals, for an unknown reason.

Judo

On day five Abderahmame Benamadi lost to Uzbekistan’s Sherali Juraev in the round of 64 in the 90kg.

Fencing

Another fencer went out on day five, it was the Canadian, Eleanor Harvey, who eliminated Anissa Khelfaoui.
