Algeria’s football team have been eliminated from the Rio Olympics after just two games, following their 2-1 defeat to Argentina.
Although the Desert Foxes gave them a good run for their money, goals from Angel Correa and Jonathan Calleri were the difference in the end. Both sides finished the encounter with ten men.
Argentina piled on the pressure in the first half and should have taken the lead had it not been for superb string of saves from Farid Chaal. Down the other end, Baghdad Bounedjah could have scored as well as he went one-on-one with Geronimo Rulli but his effort was tame.
The game looked to turn in Algeria’s favour though when captain Victor Cuesta was sent off for the South Americans after receiving two yellow cards.
Angel Correa put Argentina ahead, who had won the Olympic football tournament in both 2004 and 2008, shortly after the interval with a goal out of nothing and there was nothing Chaal could do about it.
Sofiane Bendebka then equalised against the ten men with a superb team goal and it looked as though Algeria would be in control, but then they went down to ten men themselves following Ayoub Abdellaoui’s dismissal.
West Ham bound forward Jonathan Calleri sealed the win for Julio Olarticoechea’s men after he played a neat one-two with Correa. Algeria will face Portugal in a few days’ time to cap off their Olympic adventure.
