TOKYO2020: Day 2

Day two of the Tokyo Olympic Games was almost a replicate of the opening day as another Algerian boxer advanced to the next round.

First up from the Algerian delegation was the 18 year old Fencer Meriem Mebarki who went up against Flora Pasztor of Hungary in the Women’s Foil Individual Table of 64. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be for the teenager as she lost 8-15 to her Hungarian counterpart.

Following Abdelhafid Benchabla’s success in the boxing yesterday, it was the turn of Roumaysa Boualam in the Women’s Fly (48-51kg) Round of 32 match against Jutamas Jitong. Despite her efforts she fell to the boxer from Thailand with the judges scoring 5-0.

Algerian rowers Kamel Ait Daoud and Sid Ali Boudina finished last on the opening day, but were to take part in the repechage on day two. They finished last once more with a time of 7:12.08 and will now move onto the Final C where they will come up against Thailand, Venezuela, Portugal, Uzbekistan and Chile.

Today was the start of the RS:X Men’s and Women’s Sailing which is scheduled from the 25th to 29th. Both Hamza Bouras and Nadjet Berrichi took part in their respective events. Bouras finished the day in 24th position and Berrichi in 25th position in the overall standings.

The stand out performance was left right at the end with Mohammed Houmri’s victory in the Men’s Light Heavy (75-81kg). The Algerian defeated the Venezuelan Nalek Korbaj Barrera 3-2 and will progress to the round of 16 where he will come up against Arlen Lopez of Cuba.
