Algeria Extend Their Unbeaten Games to 20 Over International Break

Algeria remain undefeated after a 1-0 victory against Nigeria and a 2-2 draw with Mexico.

It’s been just under a year since the Desert Foxes played their last competitive game, after matches were cancelled due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Nigeria 0-1 Algeria

Algerian Manager Djamel Belmadi made significant changes to the side that won the African cup back in July 2019 for their first friendly against the Super Eagles on friday night at the Jacques Lemans Arena in Austria.

The deadlock was broken in just six minutes after Borussia Monchengladbach full back Ramy Bensebaini was able to hit the net following a rebound from a corner giving the Algeria the lead.

Everton’s Alex Iwobi came close to equalising the friendly encounter, but the match ended in a clean sheet for the North Africans goal stopper Alexandre Oukidja, in what was only his 2nd appearance for Les Verts.

Mexico 2-2 Algeria

The second friendly match up saw Algeria take on Mexico, who came into the game with a victory against european giants Netherlands.

The highly competitive encounter started with both sides having high possession of the ball and very few chances on goal.

It wasn’t until two minutes before the break when El Tri took the lead after Wolverhamton Wanderers’ Raul Jimenez slipped the ball through for team mate ‘Tecatito’ Corona who was able to lob it over Rais M’bolhi.

Algeria were able to react quickly as Ismael Bennacer fired one in from distance to level the game just before the break.

Second half started with the African Champions going all out in attack, with Riyad Mahrez and Yacine Brahimi coming very close to giving their side the lead.

However, with just 55 minutes played Algeria saw themselves with one man down as Adlene Guedioura picked up his second yellow.

That didn’t stop the Desert Foxes as they continued to press forward despite playing with 10 men and on 67 minutes Manchester City forward Mahrez was played through on goal by Bensebaini to give Algeria the lead.

Mexico then failed to take advantage of the superior number till four minutes before the final whistle as Jiménez got his second assist of the game by lobbing the ball to substitute Diego Lainez who was able to equalise with a half volley shot and draw the game.

After these two fantastic performances Algeria will go with full confidence into a double headed AFCON 2021 qualifier against Zimbabwe next month.
