A total of 270 Algerian athletes flew to Rabat, the capital city of Morocco, competing in 25 sports in the 2019 African Games. 125 medals were won by Algeria at the games which took place between the 19 to 31 August.
The 125 medals were built up of 33 gold, 32 silver, 60 bronze in 19 sports disciplines, which pushed Algeria to finish the games fourth place. Egypt finished in poll position with an astonishing 271 medals won, followed by Nigeria 126 and South Africa 87, since they won more gold medals than Algeria.
Five gold medals in 11 disciplines helped Algeria climb to the top of the podium, athletics, rowing, gymnastics and swimming saw five gold medals won in each discipline.
The Swimmers were the most successful out of the Algerian athletes as they won a total of 20 medals, five gold, seven silver, eight bronze. They were followed by the gymnasts who won 17 medals (5, 7, 5) and karatekas 13 medals (2, 2, 9).
The Algerian weightlifters claimed a total of 15 medals, but failed to climb on the first step of the podium as they settled for six silver and nine bronze.
Algeria were forced to come empty handed from Morocco in six other sports, those were the handball men’s and women’s team, women’s football team, taekwondo, mountain biking, beach volleyball and snooker.
